When you install an invisible dog fence or low-voltage landscape lights, you may find the wiring needs to go underneath your sidewalk. Do not let this deter you from setting up the fence or lights the way you want them. Digging underneath the sidewalk takes a bit of time and patience, but can easily be accomplished in less than half a day and with a minimal amount of tools.
Instructions
Things You'll Need
- Spray paint
- Level
- Shovel
- Tape measure
- 3/4-inch PVC pipe
- Hacksaw
- Pressure washer
- Hammer
- Fish tape
- 1Mark the location on the ground where you will begin tunneling with spray paint. Lay a level on the sidewalk and line up one edge with the mark. Make a second mark on the ground on the sidewalk's other side, where the wire will exit from under the sidewalk.
- 2Dig a hole on each mark using a shovel. Make the holes as deep as you would like the wire to run under the sidewalk and at least 12 inches wide and long.
- 3Cut a 3/4-inch PVC pipe about 4 feet longer than the sidewalk's width using a hacksaw. Use the hacksaw to cut one of the ends at a 45-degree angle, so the end resembles that of a hypodermic needle.
- 4Place the PVC pipe's pointed end in one of the holes. Angle it down, under the sidewalk, so it is almost horizontal with the ground. Push the pipe into the ground about 12 inches. Pull the pipe out of the hole. Tap it on the sidewalk to remove the dirt stuck inside.
- 5Insert the pipe's pointed end back into the hole you just pulled it out of. Push the pole under the sidewalk another 12 inches. As you push, continue to decrease the pole's angle to the ground so you push the pole under the sidewalk instead of deeper into the ground. If necessary, dig the hole next to the sidewalk slightly longer to give yourself more room to lower the pole. Pull the pole out and tap out the soil that is inside.
- 6Repeat Step 5 until the pipe comes out into the hole on the sidewalk's other side. If it becomes too hard to push the pipe through, either spray water into the hole with a pressure washer to loosen the soil or hit the pipe's flat end with a hammer to drive it through.
- 7Cut the extra 4 feet off the PVC pipe once you empty it for the final time. Insert it back into the hole and leave it there to help keep the tunnel open.
- 8Insert a fish tape through the PVC pipe. Wrap the wire around the fish tape's hook and reel it in to bring the wire through the pipe and under the sidewalk.
